Sūtra: "Why is this?... [he is] then not a bodhisattva." / Commentary: This reveals that there is nothing to subdue. First he poses the question and then explains it. If that in which one abides is nonexistent, how could an errant mind exist? If there is also no error, then that which is subdued is also nonexistent. Since there is something subdued, the errant mind clearly has a sign; but as for saying there is no one delivered, why is this so? Hence, he replies that there is also nothing to be subdued. If bodhisattvas think that an ego and so forth are that which is subdued, they are not bodhisattvas. Seeing an ego and so forth, they cannot subdue it; those who do not subdue the ego and so forth are ordinary beings.
