From 'able to reach' up to 'toward the gate of nirvāṇa' is the third round, clarifying self-practice and external transformation. 'Bodhisattvas' wisdom and expedients [reaching] the other shore': taking true reality as the object is real wisdom; adopting the conventional is expedient means. One explanation says: wisdom taking emptiness and existence as its object, knowing them to be like emptiness, is called real wisdom; knowing without attaching is called expedient means. These two wisdoms are the parents of correct awakening and the essential framework of the myriad practices; by illuminating and attaining their nature, one reaches the other shore. 'Able to cause sentient beings to turn away from birth-and-death and proceed toward nirvāṇa': this is external transformation. Birth-and-death is ultimate suffering; nirvāṇa is ultimate bliss. Causing sentient beings to turn away from suffering and reach bliss is the movement of transformation; both 'path' and 'gate' signify being able to lead through.
