Sūtra: “If one upholds this sūtra…” to “…and makes offerings.” Second, exhorting beings to receive and uphold. Regarding “making offerings,” there are two kinds: first, superior; second, material. “Dharma offerings” means receiving, upholding, reciting, explaining, and clarifying [the teaching]; this is called a Dharma offering. “Material offerings” means various flowers, incense, precious banners, and canopies; this is called a material offering. Therefore the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa, fascicle 30, says: “Dharma offerings mean the bodhisattva practicing the six pāramitās. When offering the Dharma by observing the precepts, the bodhisattva attains the patient acceptance of the unarisen dharmas, eliminating their own afflictions and eliminating the afflictions of sentient beings. Making offerings should accord with what is appropriate: during cold weather, one should offer firewood, upper garments, heated rooms, bedding, and food and drink; during intense heat, one should offer cold water, fans, canopies, cool rooms, thin clothing, and supreme food; during wind and rain, one should go and deliver offerings.”
