Sūtra: “At that time…” to “…all go to that place.” Third, the four protectors bestowing their majesty. Regarding the Four Heavenly Kings and their retinues: according to the Kośa, fascicle 11, the heavenly hosts under the command of the Four Heavenly Kings abide only on the terraces of Mount Meru and so forth. How many terraces are there, what is their measure, and which devas abide on which terraces? Mount Sumeru has four terraces. Beginning from the water's edge to the top of the first terrace, the distance is ten thousand yojanas. In this way, reaching up to the fourth terrace, each is also ten thousand in measure. These four terraces project outward around Mount Meru, demarcating its lower half. The first terrace projects sixteen thousand [yojanas]; the second, third, and fourth terraces project eight, four, and two thousand respectively. There is a yakṣa spirit named Dṛḍhahasta (Firm-Hand) who abides on the first terrace; one named Mālādhāra (Garland-Bearer) who abides on the second terrace; and one named Sadāmada (Ever-Intoxicated) who abides on the third terrace. These three are all heavenly hosts under the command of the Four Heavenly Kings. On the fourth terrace, the Four Heavenly Kings and their retinues dwell together. Therefore the sūtra speaks accordingly of the devas of the realm of the Four Heavenly Kings. Just as on the four outer terraces of Mount Meru dwell the Four Heavenly Kings and their retinues, so too on Yugandhara, Īṣādhara, and up through the seven golden mountains there are divine dwellings. These are the domains commanded by the Four Heavenly Kings. These are called the terrestrial devas of the realm of the Four Heavenly Kings; among the desire-realm devas, these devas are the most extensive.
