"At that time, in the city of Vaiśālī, there was a son of an elder named Ratnarāśi. Together with five hundred sons of elders, holding seven-jeweled parasols, he came to the Buddha's presence, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, and each presented his parasol as an offering to the Buddha." This second section explains that the offering of parasols and the manifestation of auspicious signs signified the characteristics of the Pure Land being expounded. The text has three parts: first, offering the parasols; next, merging the parasols; finally, turning toward faith. This is the first, offering the parasols, symbolizing great compassion sheltering beings; transformationally taking birth in the Pure Land is precisely the function of great compassion. Sengzhao says: "Ratnarāśi was also a dharmakāya mahāsattva. He would regularly go with Jingming to the Tathāgata to propagate the teachings of the Way together; but now, he goes to the Buddha with only his fellow townsmen in order to provide the occasion for inquiring about the illness and to open the gate of this scripture."
