"With this wonderful Dharma he delivered the multitudes of beings; / Once received, they never retrogress and are ever tranquil. / Delivering from old age, sickness, and death, the Great Physician King, / One should pay homage to the Dharma ocean of boundless virtue." These three [lines] clarify the gaining of benefit; they clarify the benefit of severing the defilements of views and cultivation and attaining nirvāṇa. Sengzhao says: "Among the ninety-six paths, the superior ones can also sever the fetters and be born into the formless realm heavens. Yet their path is not genuine; inevitably they fall back into the three evil paths. The Buddha delivers the sentient beings of the three vehicles with the wonderful Dharma of the four truths; none of those who have already received it fall back into birth and death. Therefore it says, 'Once received, they never retrogress.' Because they forever complete the unconditioned, they are 'ever tranquil.' Furthermore, birth, old age, sickness, and death are the gravest of afflictions; he delivers them with the medicine of the Dharma, and therefore he is the foremost of physician kings. Thus the Dharma wheel is unfathomably vast, and the Dharma ocean flows with boundless nourishment, its virtue limitless."
