"The Buddha withdrew his supernatural power, and this world returned to how it had been before. Thirty-two thousand devas and humans seeking the śrāvaka vehicle knew that conditioned phenomena are all impermanent; being far removed from dust and free from defilement, they attained the purity of the Dharma-eye." These two refer to the benefits of the Hinayana. Since they did not realize [the non-duality of] pure and defiled, responding to conditions they clung to real conditioned things and saw impermanence. Sengzhao says: "A land may be defiled and yet can become pure; it may be pure and yet become defiled again. Relying on the realization of impermanence, they thereby attained the Dharma-eye. The 'Dharma-eye' is the name for the path of the srotāpanna. Because they first saw the traces of the path, they attained the Dharma-eye. 'Dust and defilement' refers to the eighty-eight fetters."
