"With immeasurable wealth, he gathered in the poor. Through pure observance of precepts, he gathered in those who transgressed the prohibitions. With the cultivation of forbearance, he gathered in the wrathful. With great energetic vigor, he gathered in the indolent. With single-minded dhyāna tranquility, he gathered in the distracted. With decisive wisdom, he gathered in the unwise." This is the second section, listing the upāya of the three karmic activities: first, the six perfections to gather in beings are the upāya of mental secret; next, the eighteen matters from "white robes" downward are the upāya of physical secret; later, the eleven matters from "most honored among elders" downward are the upāya of verbal secret. The purpose of this chapter's title lies precisely here. As for the first six perfections such as wealth, Sengzhao says: "The ultimate person does not visibly practice the six perfections; that he visibly practices the six perfections is merely to gather in the six obscurations." Here, neither stinginess nor giving, and so forth, are the origin of the dharmakāya; giving, observing precepts, and so forth, are the traces that transform beings. Without the origin, one cannot realize truth; without the traces, one cannot transform beings. This is the first, the upāya of the six perfections.
