"This body is devoid of sentience, like grass, trees, tiles, and pebbles." This is the sixth, the contemplation of the consciousness element. Grass and trees transform into myriad shapes in accord with the seasons; the conscious body undergoes diverse retributions in accord with karma. Since it changes impermanently according to conditions, how does its sentience differ from grass and trees? Moreover, grass and trees flourish or wither according to the seasons, and consciousness also arises and perishes according to conditions. Since arising and perishing are indefinite, how does its sentience differ from grass and trees? Sengzhao states: "Although the body can touch, it lacks knowledge; the internal consciousness can know, but it lacks touch. Seeking their intrinsic natures, both are devoid of sentience. Since they are devoid of sentience, how do they differ from tiles and pebbles?"
