"Expounding the Dharma with fearlessness like a lion’s roar, their preaching was like thunderclaps." From here down is the second [section], explaining the benefit of destroying evil, which has two parts: first, adducing two metaphors; second, the overall conclusion. Furthermore, the former metaphor destroys views, and the latter metaphor destroys craving. Views arise from deluded attachment to principle, and craving arises from stagnation in phenomena; if their views are solidified, the multitude of delusions has no way to be destroyed, and if their craving is bound, the sprouts of goodness cannot sprout. Therefore Kumārajīva says: "The preceding explained fearlessness at all times; this explains fearlessness in expounding the Dharma. Above, 'the lion's roar' meant that the sound of their virtue resounded afar; this explains that their ability to preach the true Dharma causes all assemblies to revere and follow them, just as the lion's roar awes and terrifies all beasts." Sengzhao also says: "The sound of the Dharma resounding afar opens and guides the sprouts [of wisdom], just as spring thunder moves the hundred grasses."
