"Why is this? I recall that in the past, the World-Honoured One's body was slightly indisposed, and cows' milk was needed. I then held my bowl and went to stand before the gate of a great brāhmaṇa's house." / This is the second, briefly explaining the reason. Sengrui says: The manifested body being indisposed is also something that cannot be discussed from a single perspective; it was specifically done so that people of shallow understanding would generate faith. Because of the Tathāgata's body, they gave rise to marks of inferiority; hence Ānanda was shown to lack comprehension, causing his confusion to be shared by the assembly. Jingming rebuked him loudly so as to proclaim the dharmakāya, causing those attached to physical form to realize that responsive manifestations are hard to anticipate, and their boundless nature cannot be fathomed. At the same time, by lodging a trace in begging for milk, he eliminated that [brāhmaṇa's] greed. Borrowing an error from Ānanda, he clarified the inferiority of the Lesser Vehicle.
