"Having manifested these divine transformations, Vimalakīrti said: 'If a donor with an equal mind gives to a single lowliest beggar, it is just like the marks of the Tathāgata's field of merit,'" The third is exhorting them to equalize their minds, in two parts: first, equality with marks; second, signless equality. This is the first. Giving to the Buddha has supernatural power; giving to the poor has no initial auspicious event like this. Since the giver was not yet able to forget discrimination, Jingming therefore showed him equality. Shi says: Giving to the Buddha, because the ground is superior, the mind is intense; giving to the poor, because the ground is lowly, the compassion is deep. Therefore, the fields of merit have identical marks, and the resulting reward is one.
