天曰。以聲聞法化眾生故我為聲聞。以因緣法化眾生故我為辟支佛。以大悲法化眾生故我為大乘　二答文二。一總約化緣答。二別約今緣答。此初也。肇曰。大乘之道無乘之乘。為彼而乘吾何乘也。生曰。隨彼為之我無定也。又解法花方便說三意同此也。

The goddess said: "Because I transform sentient beings through the Śrāvaka Dharma, I am a śrāvaka; because I transform sentient beings through the Dharma of conditioned arising, I am a pratyekabuddha; because I transform sentient beings through the Dharma of great compassion, I am the Great Vehicle." (The second part, the reply, has two sections: first, a general reply based on the conditions of transformation; second, a specific reply based on the present condition. This is the first. [Seng]zhao says: "The path of the Great Vehicle is the vehicle of no-vehicle. Riding for the sake of others, what vehicle do I ride?" [Dao]sheng says: "Adapting to them, I do it; I have no fixed status." Another explanation is that the Lotus Sūtra's expedient teaching of the three vehicles shares this meaning.)
