The Bodhisattva Siṃhamati said, "The defiled (with outflows) and the undefiled (without outflows) constitute duality. If one attains the equality of all dharmas, one does not give rise to notions of outflows or absence of outflows, neither clinging to characteristics nor abiding in the absence of characteristics. This is entering the dharma gate of non-duality."
Suffering and origin are with outflows; cessation and the path are without outflows—these constitute duality. The mahāsattva contemplates them equally as identical with the one true reality, which is non-dual. Kumārajīva says, "When a lion crosses water, it must cut straight across the current; if it goes obliquely, it does not cross. This mahāsattva, through the wisdom of the true mark, deeply penetrates all dharmas and crosses directly to the other shore; hence he is named after this metaphor."
