"Maitreya, you should know that bodhisattvas have two marks. What are the two? First, delighting in mixed phrases and literary embellishments. Second, having no fear of the profound meaning and being able to enter it in accordance with reality. If one delights in mixed phrases and literary embellishments, you should know that this is a novice bodhisattva. If one has no fear regarding such undefiled, unattached, extremely profound sūtras and can enter into them, and having heard them, one's mind is pure, and one receives, upholds, reads, recites, and practices them as taught, you should know that this is one who has long cultivated the practices of the path." / This is the third part, distinguishing the gains and losses in transmission and propagation. It has three parts; this is the first, a general distinction. Novices delight in literature; those who have long cultivated delight in the obscure. Those who transmit it should discern their capacity and affinity; learners should examine their gains and losses. There are the presentation, explanation, and conclusion, which can be seen. Sengzhao says: "The depth and shallowness of practice each have different marks; both gains and losses are set forth to encourage those who guard and uphold the Dharma."
