The Bodhisattva Padmavyūha said, "Giving rise to duality from the self constitutes duality. One who sees the true mark of the self does not give rise to dual dharmas. If one does not abide in dual dharmas, there is no consciousness. Having nothing to be conscious of is entering the dharma gate of non-duality."
Because of clinging to the self, what is confronted becomes duality. Sengzhao says, "Due to the self, there is the other; this is why the name of duality arises. If one sees the true mark of the self, consciousness of other and self has no basis to arise."
