“Samantabhadra again says: ‘For many kalpas, through the causes and conditions of the ear faculty, you have pursued external sounds; when hearing marvelous sounds, your mind became deluded and attached, and when hearing evil sounds, you gave rise to eight hundred kinds of afflictive thieves of harm. Such bad ears receive the retribution of evil events, constantly hearing evil sounds and generating all kinds of grasping conditions. Because of perverted listening, you are bound to fall into the evil destinies and borderlands of wrong views where the Dharma is not heard. Today you recite and uphold the ocean-treasure of merits of the Mahāyāna; because of these conditions you see the Buddhas of the ten directions and the stūpa of Prabhūtaratna Buddha, who now bear witness for you. You should yourself speak of your own faults and evils, and repent all your sins.’
