經曰目連復白下　第三流通分。反有三句。一啟清。二蒙讚。三正答。夫孝之大也即通於神明。豈可獨敞於當時。而不垂光於來業。所以目連啟請。務屬於茲也。文二句。一領即坐之益。賀三寶之威。二為未戊傳芳。即諮疑審定。

[When] the sūtra states, 'Maudgalyāyana again addressed [the Buddha],' and so on: The third [major division] is the propagation section. It comprises three lines: first, making the request; second, receiving praise; third, the direct answer. The greatness of filial piety reaches through to the spiritual and divine. How could it merely be open to the people of that time, without casting its light upon future deeds? For this reason Maudgalyāyana made his request, striving specifically for this. The text has two lines: first, acknowledging the benefits attained on the spot, and celebrating the power of the Three Jewels; second, so that the fragrance may be transmitted to the unliberated, he inquires into doubts to establish certainty.
