"If a monk is to make a new rug, he should use two parts of pure black sheep wool, three parts white, and four parts variegated. If a monk, without using two parts black, three parts white, and four parts variegated, makes a new rug, it is a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika." / In this full text of the precept, there are three clauses: first, the person committing the offense; second, instructing the monks on the method of making [it with] wool; third, from "if a monk" onward, determining the offense for not combining them. "If a monk" is explained as above. "Makes a new rug": the two types of wool, white and black, each have two varieties: 1. naturally white, 2. dyed white. "Variegated wool" refers to wool from the head, wool from the ears, and wool from the legs; any coarse wool from other parts is also called variegated wool. "Should make by parts": if one wishes to make a rug of forty palas, twenty palas are black, ten palas are white, and ten palas are variegated; rugs down to twenty palas can be known by inference from the above. The severity of the offenses for increasing or decreasing is explained as above. "If a monk" does not know how to make it [accordingly], he incurs an offense of forfeiture and fall. Regarding the text on forfeiture and fall, there are four kinds as clarified before. As for non-offense: if one makes it according to measure, or if one obtains what is already made, or if it is cut and spoiled to make a cap, to make socks, to make a hot-tongs cloth, or to make an inner lining cloth for leather shoes—in all such cases there is no offense.
