The sixteenth precept: on carrying sheep wool for more than three yojanas. / Now, for an ordained person to personally carry sheep wool, following worldly ways and acting like common people, impairs deportment, invites ridicule, and damages the Path; hence it was prohibited and not allowed. As for why it was further permitted up to three yojanas, there is the utility of holding it, and without it one cannot sustain oneself; further, carrying it for more than three [yojanas] determines an offense. / There are four specific conditions: 1. Costly sheep wool, excluding cheap kinds; thus the Vinaya states that wool from the head, crown, and feet is no offense; the Mahāsāṃghika says camel and pig hair, etc., incur a transgression; 2. It is one's own property; 3. Knowing it oneself; the Mahāsāṃghika says if three persons share it together and each carries it up to nine yojanas, those carrying the heavy load all commit an offense; 4. Exceeding three yojanas, an offense is immediately committed. Below, the precept text itself. This precept was instituted because Upananda gave rise to the fault.
