"If a bhikṣu, knowing another bhikṣu has already taken up a dwelling place, later comes and forcibly spreads bedding between them to stay the night, thinking, 'If he is annoyed and rebukes me, he will naturally avoid me and leave,' acting on such a pretext and no other, [it is an offense of] inappropriate deportment, a prāyaścittika." / In this full text of the precept, there are four clauses: first, the person committing the offense; second, knowing another has already obtained the dwelling place; third, from "later comes" onward, forcibly spreading it to annoy the other; fourth, from "acting on such" onward, concluding with the offense of inappropriate deportment. / The first two clauses can be understood. / Third, "forcibly spreads bedding between them": "between them" means near the head, near the feet, or on either flank. "Spreads bedding": spreading grass, spreading leaves, down to spreading a sleeping felt on the ground. / Fourth, "acting on such a pretext": meaning creating a pretext deliberately to annoy. / "And no other": because it is not for reasons such as illness. / "Inappropriate deportment": highlighting his fault. / "Prāyaścittika": this is the offense. / As stated in the Vinaya: knowing that another has obtained a dwelling place, if one later comes and forcibly spreads bedding between them to stay the night, with each turning of the body and each side touching the bed, an offense is incurred. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya states: "If, to annoy another, one opens or closes a door, lights or extinguishes a fire, or chants verses of blessing, recites sūtras, or explains the Dharma—whatever one does that displeases the other, each constitutes a prāyaścittika." / Exceptions: The Vinaya states, "If one did not know beforehand; if one spoke to him and then stayed; if the former resident offered space; if the space is wide enough not to disturb or annoy; if an old acquaintance or relative instructed, 'Just spread it, I will tell the master myself'; if one falls to the ground; if a sick person tosses and falls onto him; or in perils to life or brahma-practice: in all such cases, there is no offense."
