Precept 17: Dragging another out of a room. / The intention behind its enactment: Rooms of the Saṅgha of the four directions belong to all in common, and in principle are not exclusively allocated to anyone. When someone has already cleaned, arranged, and settled in first, those arriving later should share its use. Dragging another out with an angry mind ruins oneself and annoys others, serving as the root of dispute; the damage is not light, hence the necessity of this enactment. / There are six specific conditions: first, a spring or winter room belonging to the Saṅgha of the four directions; second, another has arrived first and already settled; third, having the intent to disturb and annoy him; fourth, dragging him out with an angry mind; fifth, having no [valid] reason—because doing so to censure, etc., is not an offense; sixth, committing the offense as soon as he is taken outside the door. Below, the text of the precept is directly clarified. This was because the group of six monks were traveling on the road together with the group of seventeen monks and reached a small resting place. The group of seventeen entered the monastery first, swept and sprinkled the rooms, making them clean. The group of six, seeing that they had obtained good accommodations, dragged them out of the rooms. The bhikṣus reported the fault, and the Buddha then enacted the precept.
