Precept 24: Giving Robes to an Unrelated Nun / Regarding the intention behind establishing [this precept]: In general, men and women have distinct forms, and in principle should not mix. Giving and receiving without good cause invites external criticism; through contact attachment is born, which may destroy the brahmacarya. The deterioration and ruin are not light, which is why the Sage established [this precept]. / There are four specific conditions: first, being a bhikṣuṇī; second, not being a relative; third, directly giving a robe; fourth, that nun receiving and accepting it, whereupon one commits the offense. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept arose because an alms-gathering bhikṣu gave a robe to a nun. Later, harboring resentment and reproaching her, he repeatedly spoke of it to others. The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha; the Buddha rebuked him and established the precept.
