Precept 40: Soliciting delicious food. The intention of the promulgation is: The affairs of leaving home especially require simplicity and purity. Now, being attached to delicious flavors and asking for fine food fosters one's own defilement of greed, annoys the donor, and invites worldly censure. Therefore the Sage instituted this rule. The specific conditions are five: 1. it is delicious food—ghee, curd, fish, meat, etc.; 2. asking from someone who is not a relative; 3. asking for oneself; 4. without cause—not being sick and unable to eat one's fill in a single sitting; 5. an offense is committed as soon as it is eaten. Below, the precept text itself is clarified. This precept arose because Upananda asked a dānapati for various fine foods, and was censured and reprimanded; bhikṣus reported the fault, and thus this precept was promulgated.
