Sixty-two: Intentionally causing another monk to feel remorse, even causing him the slightest vexation, is an offense of pāyattika. The sixfold group and the seventeenfold group harbored discord in their minds from quarreling, and often spoke with contempt and envy, saying: 'You received the upasampadā before turning twenty; you did not obtain the precepts and are not a śramaṇa.' By this they vexed them, causing them doubt and remorse. In all cases, vexing a senior monk with six matters is a pāyattika: first, birth; second, receiving the precepts; third, offenses; fourth, inquiries; fifth, material goods; sixth, Dharma. One says to him: 'When did your underarm hair grow? When did it come out again? When did you receive the precepts? Who served as the three masters? Did you receive the precepts in an assembly of five or an assembly of ten? Where did you receive the precepts—inside the boundary or outside the boundary?' When the other answers truthfully, one then vexes him, saying: 'You were born during such-and-such king's reign; at that time your hair came out; at that time you received the precepts; such-and-such served as the three masters. Those who received the precepts inside the boundary did not obtain the precepts and are not śramaṇas.' Whether the other gives rise to doubt and remorse or does not give rise to it, for each statement it is a pāyattika. Furthermore, saying: 'You violated the precepts of the last four sections and are not a śramaṇa' is also a pāyattika for each statement. Furthermore, inquiring where he stayed, and when he answers truthfully, then saying: 'You went to the dwelling of such-and-such woman or such-and-such nun, sitting, rising, and conversing; you are not a śramaṇa.' Also: 'Your use of various requisite items together with such-and-such monk also makes you not a śramaṇa.' Furthermore, at the time of the kaṭhina robe, saying: 'You eat repeatedly, store extra robes, and so forth; you are not a śramaṇa.' Whether he gives rise to doubt and remorse or does not, for every single statement it is a pāyattika. Outside these six matters, using any other matter to cause a monk or anyone else to doubt and remorse is a duṣkṛta.
