Sixty-three: Poking painfully with the hand is an offense of pāyattika. There was a young boy among the seventeenfold group who could not bear tickling. [Another monk] struck and tickled him with fingers, whereupon his breath was cut off and he died. In that death, both committed pāyattika. If with one finger, one pāyattika; if with ten fingers, ten pāyattikas. Poking with a finger or extending a finger is a duṣkṛta. Striking and tickling with wood, stone, or things not part of the body is a duṣkṛta. If it causes pain but not tickling, and does not cause fainting and suffocation, there is no offense.
