Sixty-five: Lodging in the same dwelling with a woman is an offense of pāyattika. Aniruddha was wandering, and as evening approached he lodged in a courtesan's dwelling. There are four kinds of dwellings: first, completely covered and enclosed; second, completely enclosed but not completely covered; third, not completely covered and enclosed; fourth, half-covered and enclosed. In these four kinds of dwellings, lodging together with a woman, a female non-human, or a female animal is in all cases a pāyattika. Rising and lying down again is a pāyattika each time. Even if both sleep, or if one sleeps, it is immediately called 'lodging'; taking what does not pass the night as lodging. If both do not sleep through the entire night, there is no offense. If a woman lodges in another room, and there is a hole in the wall large enough for a cat to enter, it is a pāyattika. For elephants, leaning or standing is called 'lodging'; for camels, oxen, and sheep, lying down or standing is called 'lodging'. Both sleeping, one sleeping, or both not sleeping are also like this.
