71. Traveling along the same road together by agreement with thieves to a single village [is a pāyattika]. In the past, monks lost their way while traveling in the wilderness. Encountering fierce bandits, they sought them out as companions. [Officials] seized and arrested them and sent them to the authorities; only after undergoing regulation were they released. In general, if one makes an agreement with thieves to travel together by water or by land, going from village to village is an offense of pāyattika. Turning back halfway is a duṣkṛta. Ten li through unpopulated land is an offense of pāyattika. Turning back halfway is a duṣkṛta. If one has not made an appointment, or if thieves escort one across a dangerous place, there is no offense.
