72. Conferring full ordination on a person not full twenty years of age is a pāyattika; this person does not obtain the precepts, and the monks are blameworthy. When a monk of the saptadaśavargika group was not yet full twenty, Maudgalyāyana conferred the great precepts upon him. Since his age was young, and moreover he was a child of an aristocratic and comfortable family, at late afternoon he suffered from hunger and wept like a small child. Therefore, one who is not yet full twenty is not permitted to receive the precepts, because he is not yet developed and cannot endure hardship. When receiving the precepts in the Saṃgha, he is asked, 'Are you full twenty years of age or not?' If he is not yet full [twenty] and answers, 'I am not full [twenty],' and they confer the precepts upon him, this person does not obtain the precepts; the preceptor and the monks incur an offense; engaging in acts together and dwelling together also incurs an offense. If it was to unite the assembly to break the Saṃgha, it is an offense of sthūlāccaya; if done with another intention, it is a duṣkṛta. If he is not yet full [twenty] and answers, 'I am full [twenty],' this person obtains the precepts; the preceptor and the monks incur an offense; engaging in acts together and dwelling together incurs no offense. If he is full [twenty] and answers, 'I am not full [twenty],' this person obtains the precepts; the preceptor and the monks incur an offense; engaging in acts together and dwelling together also incurs an offense. If he is full [twenty] and answers, 'I am full [twenty],' this person obtains the precepts; the preceptor and the monks incur no offense; engaging in acts together and dwelling together also incurs no offense. Because those under seven years old or over sixty cannot endure hardship and would cause distaste and detriment to the Buddhadharma, they must not be ordained. If ordained, they do not obtain the precepts. The one who ordains and the one who confers the precepts incur a duṣkṛta.
