78. Slighting another monk is a pāyattika. When a venerable elder was expounding the sūtra-dharma, Chanda was disrespectful and lacked reverence or fear; without waiting for the exposition to end, he disrupted it with irrelevant talk. On this account, the precept was formulated. A jñapti-caturtha-karman was performed for him, designating that monk as refusing respectful service. In general, when listening to the exposition of the Dharma and the instructions of the five categories of precepts, for disrespectful disorderly speech there are two kinds in the Saṃgha: before being designated for disrespectful conduct, failing to instruct is a duṣkṛta; after being designated, disrespect incurs a pāyattika. A senior being disrespectful to a junior, whether designated or not designated, in all cases incurs a duṣkṛta.
