Twenty-three: Begging thread oneself and having an unrelated weaver weave it. The ṣaḍvargika monks had unrelated householders order weavers to weave. Those designated householders were scattered and did not comply with the order; their work was done in vain and their livelihoods neglected, and voices of resentment went abroad. On account of this, [the Buddha] formulated the precept: the offender commits a forfeiture and pāyattika. Hiring them oneself or sending another person to do so incurs the same offense under this precept. If one seeks to hire a weaver oneself, or if they willingly make it with empty hands without charge, there is no offense.
