Twenty-four: Having a weaver weave cloth for a robe through an unrelated householder's wife. A householder wished to make a robe for Upananda, but did not consult him beforehand to let him have what he desired; moreover, the price of the thread for making the robe was already fixed. Yet Upananda privately influenced the weaver, asking him to make a superior robe that was both wide and dense, using thread exceeding the allotted amount. Furthermore, having obtained the robe, he did not pay the weaver. The householder lost his thread and was extremely angry; the weaver worked in vain and also harbored resentment in his heart. Although only one robe was sought, offenses were incurred in two places: toward the householder, a forfeiture and pāyattika; toward the weaver, two kinds [of offenses]. If one had previously definitely promised to give him something and later did not give it, one commits a grave offense; if one initially intended and verbally agreed to give it, one commits a pāyattika.
