Forty-two: Sitting in the sleeping quarters of a household that eats—meaning that a woman is the food for a man. There was a householder newly married, who took pleasure only in this eating [of sexual desire]. Nanda was an acquaintance of his and repeatedly went to converse, hindering his desire for this food. That [householder] was greatly enraged. For this reason, [the Buddha] did not allow sitting in the quarters of a household that eats. With each rising and sitting, one commits an offense of pāyattika for each, because it troubles others, or because one might be harmed, or because it causes slander. If it is a household that has attained the Path, or a household that has received the five precepts, or if the parents are present, or if both husband and wife have received the precepts, or if many people go in and out of the house, staying and sitting is without offense. If only one person has received the precepts, staying and sitting incurs a duṣkṛta.
