Forty-three: Forcibly sitting alone with a woman in the sleeping quarters of a household that eats. The precept on eating is as above. There was a household newly wedded, and the husband was not present. Nanda sat in that place where they eat desire. Later, there was a monk who came to the house to beg for food and afterwards returned to the monastery; Nanda himself spoke of it. For this reason, the precept was instituted: in a screened place of a household that eats, one may not forcibly sit alone with a woman—in order to stop unrighteous acts within the house and to guard against suspicion and criticism. Herein, an offense is committed on account of three things: first, a household that eats; second, being alone with a woman; third, a deep and secluded place. On account of these three things, an offense is committed. This pāyattika rule: if one rises and sits down again, it is an offense of pāyattika. If the door is closed, even though there is a pure person outside, one still commits an offense of pāyattika. If the door is opened and there is a pure person facing outward, one incurs a duṣkṛta. If the door is opened and there is a pure person facing inward, there is no offense.
