Text on adjudication from the second fascicle of the Good Recitation (Kuśalādhyāya) in the tenth recitation of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: There was a sick monk. The saṃgha was distributing cooked rice. A caregiver of the sick took a portion for him. This sick person died. They did not know what to do and reported the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha said: 'If the rice was taken after the sick person died, it should be returned to its original place. If he died after the rice was taken without impediment, it is distributed together with the rest of his wealth and property.' (The master of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya explains: 'This food is heavy property. Now, speaking of distributing it, it means the saṃmukhībhūta-saṃgha disposes of it, hence it says "distributed". Speaking of distributing money is also like this.') There was a sick monk who had many robes and bowls and many livelihood possessions. He said to the caregivers: 'Call the monks to come; I shall dispose of these: this item to the Buddha, this item to the saṃgha, and this to [another] person.' The caregivers thought to themselves: 'If this monk gives these items to the Buddha, to the saṃgha, and to [another] person, we will get nothing.' Thereupon they did not call the monks. This sick person died. The caregivers reported this matter to the Buddha. The Buddha said: 'Do not, on account of a petty reason, go against the words of a sick person; whatever was to be disposed of, you should execute it all.' In the third fascicle of the Good Recitation, a caregiver's taking of a share of robes is the same as cooked rice.
