The first gate, on the three factors of dwelling with clear comprehension in going and returning (abhikranta-pratikrānta), has four parts: 1. General presentation of the sūtra phrases; 2. Specific questions, divided into three as in the treatise; 3. Specific answers, divided into three: (1) Answering the characteristics of going, divided into two: a. Presentation, b. Explanation, divided into three as in the treatise; (2) Answering the characteristics of returning, divided into two: a. Presentation, b. Explanation, divided into three as in the treatise; (3) Answering the characteristics of dwelling with clear comprehension in going and returning, divided into two: a. Presentation, b. Explanation, divided into two: (a) Clarifying the characteristics of clear comprehension, (b) Clarifying the benefits of clear comprehension, divided into four: <i> Based on intrinsic nature (svabhāva), <ii> Based on locus (āśraya/sthāna), <iii> Based on time (kāla), <iv> Clarifying benefits based on variety of modalities (prakāra); 4. General conclusion.
