Regarding 'First, the sense of cognitive reflection', and so forth: according to the commentary on the four-fascicle Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, there are two kinds of mind: first, the mind of cognitive reflection (citta); second, the mind of genuine reality (hṛdaya). The eight consciousnesses are all called false discrimination; all seizing upon and reflecting on false sense-objects are called the mind of cognitive reflection (citta). Since it can transform into and give rise to all dharmas, it is the genuine, real essence and characteristic of all dharmas; therefore, it is also called the genuine and real mind.
