1.75

如病損眼識並見黃者。顯發眼識必由眼根。如迦末羅病損壞眼根故於青色等並見為黃。只由根壞識謬見生。不由色壞眼識謬見。以色境相壞與不壞識稱境知。若根壞時識即謬見。故發識用必在眼根不在色境。

Regarding 'Just as when the eye is damaged by disease, the consciousness sees everything as yellow': this shows that the arising of the eye consciousness must depend on the eye faculty. For example, when kāmalā disease damages the eye faculty, it sees blue and other colors entirely as yellow. It is solely due to the impairment of the faculty that the consciousness generates erroneous seeing; it is not due to the impairment of form that the eye consciousness sees erroneously. For whether the appearance of the form-object is damaged or not, the consciousness perceives in conformity with the object; if the faculty is damaged, the consciousness immediately perceives erroneously. Therefore, the function of generating consciousness must reside in the eye faculty, not in the form-object.
