Treatise: As for the characteristic of cognitive purity, [it is by relying on the perfuming power of the Dharma and practicing in accordance with reality that one fulfills expedients].
Commentary: Next, we distinguish according to the names. Herein there are two: first, explaining the characteristic of cognitive purity, and later, the characteristic of inconceivable activity. Within cognition there are two: first, directly explaining the characteristic of purity, and later, questions and answers to resolve doubts. In the former there are also two: first cause, then fruit. This is the first. It means that prior to the stages, by the internal and external perfuming power of the Dharma of tathatā, one can cultivate the roots of goodness of the provisions and preparatory applications; therefore it says "relying on the perfuming power of the Dharma". When ascending to the stages, one accords with and realises tathatā, and initiating practice commensurate with reality is called "practicing in accordance with reality". Gradually practicing and cultivating until reaching the vajra-like position, when causal practice is perfected, it is called "fulfilling expedients". Thus the New Treatise says: "deeds of merit are fulfilled."
