Regarding "uninterrupted, defiling dharmas, and so forth": The Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra says: What are called interrupted, defiling dharmas? Briefly, there are four kinds: First, practice without compassion; this means that when carrying out practice, one has no intention to deliver sentient beings. Second, practice not in accord with principle; this means that when cultivating one pāramitā, one impairs the others. Third, practice that is not constant; this means that there are frequent interruptions in the pāramitā being cultivated. Fourth, practice that is not earnest; this means that when cultivating, one gives rise to contemptuous thoughts toward the objective realms before one. Freedom from these four kinds is termed "uninterrupted, [non-]defiling dharmas". What is termed "practice without skillful means"? It means merely giving material gifts to grant sentient beings comfort, but not practicing the gift of Dharma to achieve superior benefit. Why is this so? It is not merely bestowing wealth that is called truly benefiting them; only establishing them in wholesome dharmas is genuine benefit. If one is free of this [fault], that is called being free of practice without skillful means.
