約別而言初障等者。謂約相增別相而說。以煩惱障能感生死故障涅槃。說所知障礙智不生故障菩提。

"Speaking in terms of distinction, the first obstructs..." and so forth: This is spoken in terms of predominant and distinct characteristics. Because afflictions can induce saṃsāra, they obstruct nirvāṇa; cognitive hindrances are said to obstruct wisdom from arising, thus obstructing bodhi.
