以初發心而甚等者。初菩提心甚難可發。若不廣陳行相難見。故於初住離出十信令解進趣。菩提之心總別雙舉四十心矣。

"Because the initial resolve is extremely..." and so forth: the initial bodhi-mind is extremely difficult to generate; if its mental modes are not expounded at length, they are hard to perceive. Therefore, at the initial dwelling, the ten faiths are distinguished to cause understanding and progress. The bodhi-mind is enumerated both collectively and individually as forty minds.
