1.77

菩薩種姓得具足者。種姓有二。一本種姓。無始時來法爾有故。二習種姓。後聞法已新熏起故。自有本種未聞正法無新熏種有。雖聞法新熏法種。無本住種。隨闕一種名不具足。以瑜伽論及唯識宗許有一分無姓有情故。雖新熏種有闕本種者。若具二種能發心也。

Regarding “the bodhisattva’s spiritual lineage being complete”: spiritual lineage (gotra) has two types. The first is the fundamental lineage, which exists naturally from beginningless time. The second is the acquired lineage, which is newly perfumed and arises later upon hearing the Dharma. There are those who naturally possess the fundamental lineage, but having not heard the true Dharma, do not possess the newly perfumed lineage. There are also those who, although they hear the Dharma and newly perfume the Dharma lineage, lack the fundamentally abiding lineage. If either one is lacking, it is called incomplete. Because the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra and the Vijñaptimātra tradition maintain that there is a portion of sentient beings without spiritual lineage, although the newly perfumed lineage exists, there are those who lack the fundamental lineage. If one possesses both kinds, one is able to generate the [bodhi] mind.
