1.78

謂欲從諸不善等者。善不善處通因及果。且因相者。如作諸非法名不善處。令捨惡從善名置善處。言果相者。從三惡道不善之處。置人天道善果之處。惑但行因即必感果。但約因說善不善處。

Regarding “desiring to [deliver sentient beings] from unwholesome states,” and so forth: wholesome and unwholesome states apply to both cause and effect. First, as for their causal aspects: committing various non-dharmas is called an unwholesome state; causing them to abandon evil and pursue good is called establishing them in a wholesome state. As for their resultant aspects: taking them out of the unwholesome states of the three bad destinies and establishing them in the states of the wholesome fruits of the human and deva destinies. Or, whenever causes are practiced, fruits are necessarily induced, so wholesome and unwholesome states may simply be explained in terms of causes.
