時阿那律將阿難出在外，須臾復喚阿難前，還舊事具責阿難。爾時阿難心意荒亂內自念言：「佛滅度未久，恥我乃爾！」即思惟四意止、四意斷、四神足、五根、五力、七覺、八道，分別苦本、集、滅、道果，即於眾前成阿羅漢，諸塵垢滅朗然大悟。聖眾稱善諸天歌歎，當於爾時地六反震動，諸天散花作倡伎樂，色身滅度法身出世，利益眾生多所潤及，即使阿難昇七寶高座。

Then Aniruddha took Ānanda outside; a moment later he called Ānanda forward again and, returning to the previous matters, fully reproached Ānanda. At that time Ānanda, his mind bewildered and distraught, thought to himself, "Not long after the Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, I am humiliated like this!" He immediately contemplated the four smṛtyupasthānas, the four samyakprahāṇas, the four ṛddhipādas, the five indriyas, the five balas, the seven bodhyaṅgas, and the eightfold path, and analyzed the root of suffering, its accumulation, its cessation, and the fruit of the path. Thereupon, before the assembly, he became an arhat; all defilements were extinguished and he was brilliantly and greatly enlightened. The holy assembly praised him, saying, "Excellent!" and the devas sang and lauded him. At that moment the earth shook in six ways, the devas scattered flowers and made music, and as the rūpakāya had entered parinirvāṇa, the dharmakāya appeared in the world, benefiting sentient beings and enriching very many; they then had Ānanda ascend a high throne of the seven jewels.
