佛復告彌勒菩薩摩訶薩：「我今緣盡無教化處，此經留住或千年，或至二千年，或至三千年，令分為三分，一分付與阿難，度我遺法弟子；一分與難陀優鉢羅龍王；餘一分者彌勒與我宣傳；使一切眾生普得聞知，無得中斷。彌勒！汝作佛時，汝當宣布此經，十方天下眾生，蠕動、喘息、蚑行、人物之類，皆蒙此經悉得解脫。彌勒！汝般涅槃後，此經二十一劫流布在世，然後乃斷。若有善男子、善女人諷誦此經，心不錯亂發大弘誓，欲令眾生悉同我願，同時俱生清淨國土，承事禮敬諸佛世尊，如願得之而無罣礙。」

The Buddha further said to Maitreya Bodhisattva-mahāsattva, “My conditions are now exhausted, and I have no further places to teach. This sūtra shall remain for perhaps a thousand years, perhaps up to two thousand years, perhaps up to three thousand years. Let it be divided into three portions: one portion is entrusted to Ānanda to deliver the disciples of my bequeathed Dharma; one portion to the Nāga King Nanda-Utpala; the remaining portion, Maitreya, shall be proclaimed with me, so that all sentient beings everywhere may hear and know it without interruption. Maitreya! When you become a Buddha, you must proclaim this sūtra; sentient beings of the ten directions under heaven, crawling, breathing, wriggling, and human beings alike, will all receive the benefit of this sūtra and achieve liberation. Maitreya! After your parinirvāṇa, this sūtra will circulate in the world for twenty-one kalpas, and only then will it come to an end. If there are good men or good women who recite this sūtra with unconfused minds, and make a great universal vow: ‘May all sentient beings share my vow, and be born together at the same time in the pure lands, serving and paying homage to the Buddhas, the Bhagavats,’ they will attain it according to their vow without hindrance.”
