"For countless asaṃkhyeya kalpas I have cultivated the divine faculty of hearing, hearing everywhere the actions and retributions of sentient beings in the ten directions: dark actions have dark retributions, white actions have white retributions, neither-dark-nor-white actions have [their] retributions, contaminated actions have contaminated retributions, and uncontaminated actions have uncontaminated retributions. I hear those sentient beings' pure sounds—sounds neither male nor female, supple sounds neither masculine nor feminine, sounds neither long nor short, non-human sounds, brahma-sounds and pure sounds, kalavīra gentle sounds, sounds neither coarse nor subtle. Furthermore, with the divine ear I hear those sentient beings getting rid of defilements and severing bonds, not abiding in conditioned characteristics, not abiding in unconditioned characteristics, not abiding in characteristics of the past, future, or present, abiding yet not abiding, not abiding yet not non-abiding, with no 'I' or 'self' abiding, not abiding yet not non-abiding, those who attain buddhahood and those who do not attain buddhahood, those who attain the Path and those who do not attain the Path, those who are born in heaven and those not born in heaven, those born as humans and those not born as humans, those born as hungry ghosts and those not born as hungry ghosts, those born in the hells and those not born in the hells, and those born as animals and those not born as animals. Distinguishing the five destinies and listening with the divine ear, I hear and know them all completely. This is called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's accomplishment of the divine faculty of hearing.
