“All conditioned phenomena have already ceased,
Consciousness is an external dharma;
All who are born entirely return to an end,
Nirvāṇa is the supreme bliss.
I take refuge in the Leaping Buddha,
The Dharma King, foremost and supreme;
Sitting beneath the jambu tree,
He first shattered the net of desire,
Preached the Dharma to deliver the people,
And made offerings to the fields of merit.
Sitting beneath the tree in contemplation,
The King of Brahmā came to beseech him:
‘May the Honored One awake from dhyāna,
Pitying the foolish and deluded people.’
At that time, the King Mahābrahmā,
Holding a lapis lazuli lute in hand,
Praised the Buddha’s merits
With a soft, harmonious, and elegant voice:
‘In hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas,
Only occasionally is the aspiration for the Way aroused;
The aspiration for the Way is the root of a bodhisattva,
Occurring only once in millions of kalpas;
May you swiftly arise from dhyāna,
And turn the unexcelled wheel of the Dharma.
Just like the uḍumbara flower,
Occurring only once in a great while;
The Buddha appears to illumine the world,
Dispelling the darkness of defilements.’
In the Leaping Buddha’s world,
Hearing the pure precepts and giving,
It is not like the Able-to-Endure Land,
Which is obstinate and difficult to transform.
Contemplating the path of dhyāna,
Destroying the body without receiving realization,
Turning thrice the five obstructing dharmas,
And the twelve entangling bonds;
The thirty-two tasks of the Way,
And the sixteen minds of compassionate sorrow.
In countless kalpas of antiquity,
He vowed with a vajra-like resolve;
Emitting a great radiance,
It shines everywhere across all Buddha-realms.”
