“Some hungry ghosts are one span in height, some have bodies the size of a human, some are as large as a thousand yojanas, and yet other ghosts have bodies as huge as snow-clad mountains. Naked without clothing, their disheveled hair wraps around them. Dark, emaciated, and withered, with only skin wrapping their bones and having neither flesh nor blood, their bodies are coarse and rough like withered trees. Constantly tormented by hunger and thirst, fire burns inside their mouths and flames shoot outward. Their minds are constantly filled with wrath without any compassion. Feverish, distressed, and panicked, they seek coolness but cannot obtain it. Reflecting on this suffering, they give rise to yet heavier suffering; conditioning suffering, they produce suffering, creating once more the causes of suffering, and in future bodies they will again undergo retributions of suffering.
