"Fifth, as for viewing enemies and kin with equanimity: one gives rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion toward all sentient beings without any notion of other or self. Why is that? If one sees enemies as different from kin, that is discrimination; through discrimination, thoughts and attachments arise; through the causes and conditions of thoughts and attachments, the defilements arise; through the causes and conditions of the defilements, bad karma is created; and through the causes and conditions of bad karma, bitter retribution is received."
